I wanted one place where everything lived.
Not another complicated travel planner, just something simple that my family could actually use together.
So I made a homemade vacation app with Playful.

Start with the trip you’re actually taking
When I opened Playful, I didn’t think about features.
I thought about all the little things we usually lose track of before a trip.
The hotel confirmation.
The places everyone wanted to visit.
The restaurant my friend recommended.
The packing list that somehow gets rewritten every vacation.
Instead of trying to design the app myself, I simply described what I wanted.

One of my favorite parts was giving everyone their own space.

It made the trip feel like something we were planning together.
Leave room for changing plans
One thing family vacations have taught me is that the best moments are often the ones you didn’t plan.
Maybe it rains.
Maybe everyone is tired after a long morning.
Maybe you discover a little bakery that wasn’t on anyone’s list.
Instead of scheduling every hour, I organized ideas by neighborhood, indoor versus outdoor activities, and places we could visit if we had extra time.
That way we always had options without feeling locked into a schedule.
Don’t forget the little things
Some of the most useful parts of the app had nothing to do with sightseeing.
We added reminders for things like:
- Water the plants
- Pack phone chargers
- Download movies for the flight
- Check passports
- Arrange pet care
- Empty the refrigerator before leaving
They’re easy things to forget, especially when you’re trying to get everyone out the door.
Having them all in one place made leaving for vacation feel much calmer.
The vacation doesn’t end when you get home
After the trip, we didn’t delete the app.
Instead, it slowly turned into a scrapbook.
We added favorite photos.
Funny stories we’d already started forgetting.
Restaurants we’d definitely visit again.
Little discoveries we wanted to remember for next time.
Looking back, those memories became just as valuable as the original plan.
