Every creative project starts the same way. You find an idea you love, save a few photos, maybe buy some supplies, and tell yourself you’ll start this weekend. Then life gets busy.
A week later you’re trying to remember which paint color you liked, where you saved the measurements, or whether you already ordered the ribbon you needed. I’ve done this more times than I’d like to admit.
The hardest part of a craft project usually isn’t making it. It’s remembering where everything is.
I wanted one place where every project could live, from the first idea to the finished result, so I decided to make a homemade craft project app with Playful.
When I opened Playful, I didn’t try to design the perfect crafting app. I simply thought about my current project and everything I kept looking for.
I wanted a place to save inspiration photos, a shopping list for supplies, measurements, progress photos, a checklist for each step, and a section where I could write down things I wanted to remember for next time.
That was enough for Playful to build the first version.
One thing I noticed was how often I repeated the same work. I’d search Pinterest again, measure the same piece of furniture again, forget which brand of paint I liked, or accidentally buy supplies I already owned.
Now everything stays with the project. When I come back a few days later, I know exactly where I left off. I don’t waste twenty minutes trying to remember what I was doing before I can actually start creating.
Pinterest is great for collecting ideas, but it doesn’t remember what happened once you started making something.
As I worked, I began adding little notes to each project. Why I changed the original design. Which fabric looked better in person. The shortcut that saved me an hour. The mistake I never want to make again.
Those notes have become just as valuable as the inspiration itself.
I also started saving progress photos.
Sometimes it feels like you’re not getting anywhere because you’re looking at the project every day. Seeing where it started makes it much easier to appreciate how far you’ve come. It’s also helpful months later when you want to recreate something or remember how you solved a problem.
After I finished my first project, I didn’t delete it. I started another one.
Then another.
Over time, the app became less of a project tracker and more of a personal creative library. I can open an old sewing project, a holiday decoration, or a piece of furniture and immediately remember the materials I used, the measurements, and what I’d do differently next time.
That has probably been the biggest surprise.
Creative projects should feel creative, not chaotic.
