Every spring, I tell myself the same thing: this year I’m going to remember what I planted.
A few weeks later, I’m standing in the garden wondering if those tiny sprouts are tomatoes or peppers. I can’t remember when I last fertilized the herbs, and I know I took a photo of the flower bed somewhere… I just have no idea where.
Gardening isn’t the hard part. Keeping track of everything is.
I wanted one place where I could remember what I planted, when I planted it, and all the little things I’d normally forget by the following season. So I built a homemade garden journal with Playful.
When I opened Playful, I didn’t try to build the perfect gardening app. I simply thought about the information I was always looking for. I wanted to keep track of what was planted, where it was growing, when I watered it, and any notes I’d want to remember next year. I also wanted a place to save photos because it’s surprisingly hard to remember how much everything changes over a season.
That was enough for Playful to build the first version.
One thing I learned pretty quickly is that gardening is full of small discoveries. Maybe one variety of tomatoes grows much faster than another. Maybe one corner of the yard gets more afternoon sun than you expected. Maybe a certain fertilizer worked really well.
Those are exactly the kinds of things I always think I’ll remember.
I never do.
Now, whenever I notice something, I add a quick note. It takes less than a minute, but those little observations become incredibly helpful the following season.
I also started taking photos every couple of weeks.
At first it was just for fun, but now it’s one of my favorite parts of the app. Looking back at where everything started makes it much easier to see what’s thriving, what struggled, and how much the garden changes throughout the season.
It’s also surprisingly motivating. Sometimes it feels like nothing is growing, but one quick look at a photo from three weeks earlier tells a completely different story.
The biggest surprise came the following spring.
Instead of starting from scratch, I already knew which vegetables did well, which flowers attracted pollinators, which plants needed more space, and which watering schedule actually worked.
It felt less like starting over and more like picking up where I left off.
A garden changes a little every day, and it’s impossible to remember every detail.
Making a homemade garden journal with Playful gave me one place to keep photos, planting dates, watering notes, and everything I learn along the way.
Now, instead of wondering what worked last year, I can simply open the app and spend more time doing the part I actually enjoy: being in the garden.
