Family reunions always sound like a great idea… until it’s time to organize one.
Someone wants to know where everyone is staying. Someone else asks what they should bring. One cousin can’t remember the address, another is asking about the schedule, and before long the family group chat has turned into hundreds of messages where nobody can find the answer they’re looking for.
That happened the last time I helped organize a reunion. The information wasn’t complicated, it was just scattered everywhere. Addresses were in one conversation, the potluck list was in another, and every few days someone would ask the exact same question that had already been answered.
I wanted one place where everyone could find what they needed without having to text me.
So I built a homemade family reunion app with Playful.

Start with the questions everyone asks
When I opened Playful, I didn’t think about building an event planner. I simply thought about all the questions I knew were coming.
Where is everyone staying? Who’s bringing dessert? What’s the plan for Saturday? What time should everyone arrive? Is anyone allergic to anything?
Instead of trying to organize all of that in a group chat, I described the app I wished we already had. I wanted a weekend schedule, a shared potluck signup, addresses and directions, sleeping arrangements, things to bring, emergency contacts, and a place where family members could post updates before the reunion.
That was enough for Playful to build the first version.
Let everyone help organize
One of my favorite parts was that I no longer had to manage every little detail.
Instead of texting me, people could update what they were bringing themselves. Someone claimed drinks. Someone else signed up for dessert. My aunt added a few outdoor games for the kids, and one of my cousins shared a playlist for the barbecue.
It stopped feeling like one person organizing the entire weekend and started feeling like everyone was helping.
Don’t forget the little details
As the reunion got closer, we kept adding small things we knew people would ask about.
A map showing where everyone was staying. A simple timeline for the weekend. Phone numbers in case someone got lost. The closest grocery store. A pharmacy nearby. Even the Wi-Fi password for the rental house.
None of those details are exciting, but they’re exactly the kind of information people spend the whole weekend looking for.
Having everything in one place made the reunion feel much more relaxed.
Keep the memories after everyone goes home
After the reunion, I almost deleted the app.
Instead, people started uploading photos. My uncle added one of Grandpa’s old recipes. Someone wrote down the story behind a family tradition I had completely forgotten. Even the kids added funny pictures they had taken over the weekend.
Without planning it, the app slowly became something completely different.
It wasn’t just helping us organize the reunion anymore.
It had become a place where we could keep the memories after everyone went home.
The takeaway
The best part of a family reunion is spending time together, not answering the same logistical questions all weekend.
Making a homemade family reunion app with Playful gave everyone one place for schedules, addresses, potluck signups, photos, and family updates. It made the planning easier, but more importantly, it helped us enjoy the weekend instead of worrying about where everything was.
Looking back, I wish we’d had something like this years ago.
