Starting a book club sounds simple, pick a book, choose a date, invite a few friends...Then real life happens.
Someone forgets which book you’re reading. Someone else asks what chapter you’re discussing. Half the group votes in the chat, the other half replies to the email, and somehow you’re scrolling through weeks of messages trying to remember whose turn it is to host.
I’ve been there.
The reading was never the hard part. Keeping everything organized was.
I wanted one place where our book club could live.
Not another complicated project management tool. Just something simple that made it easier to enjoy reading together.
So I built a homemade book club app with Playful.
When I opened Playful, I didn’t think about features first.
I thought about the questions that kept coming up every month.
What are we reading next?
Who’s hosting?
When are we meeting?
What chapter should we finish before then?
Instead of trying to design the app myself, I simply described what I wanted.
That was enough to build the first version.
One of the biggest improvements was having everything in one place.
Nobody had to scroll through weeks of text messages looking for the meeting time.
Nobody wondered which edition everyone was reading.
Nobody forgot whose house we were meeting at.
Whenever someone had a recommendation for next month, they simply added it to the app.
Everyone could see it.
Everyone could vote.
It made the whole process feel much calmer.
I also added a section for discussion questions.
Whenever someone came across an interesting quote or a chapter they wanted to talk about, they could save it while they were reading.
By the time we met, nobody was trying to remember the page number or flipping through the book looking for that one paragraph.
Everything was already there.
It made our conversations feel much more natural.
One feature I didn’t think I’d care about ended up being my favorite.
Every finished book stayed in the app.
Along with it, we kept:
It slowly became more than a reading list.
It became a history of our book club.
Looking back at the books we read two years ago reminded me just as much of the people around the table as the stories we had read.
Every group is different.
Some meet every month.
Some meet every six weeks.
Some focus on mystery novels.
Others read biographies or business books.
That’s what I liked about making our own app.
It reflected our group instead of asking us to fit into someone else’s version of a book club.
As our club changed, the app changed with it.
The best part of a book club isn’t finishing another book.
It’s the conversations that happen because everyone read the same story.
Making a homemade book club app with Playful didn’t make us read more books.
It simply removed the little organizational headaches that kept getting in the way.
Now we spend less time figuring out the logistics and more time talking about the books we actually came together to read.
