If you’re anything like me, you probably have hundreds of saved ideas on Pinterest. Recipes you’ll eventually make. DIY projects you’ll start “next weekend.” Holiday decorations. Home office inspiration. Birthday party ideas. The problem isn’t finding inspiration. The problem is turning one of those ideas into something real.
I realized I was collecting far more ideas than I was actually finishing. Every time I wanted to start a project, I’d open Pinterest, save ten more ideas, and somehow end up feeling even less sure about where to begin.
I wanted a way to stop collecting and start making, so I built a homemade project planner with Playful.

Start with one project
The biggest mistake I used to make was trying to organize every idea I’d ever saved. This time, I picked just one project.
I opened Playful, copied over a few inspiration photos, and described what I wanted instead of worrying about layouts or features. I wanted a place to save inspiration, keep track of materials, write down measurements, create a shopping list, and break the project into small steps.
That was enough for Playful to build the first version.
Give every project a next step
One thing I noticed was that most of my saved ideas never became projects because they didn’t have a clear starting point. They were just beautiful pictures.
So I added one simple section called Next Step.
Sometimes it was something as small as measure the wall, order fabric samples, buy paint, or print the template. Having one clear action waiting for me made it much easier to come back to a project after a busy week. I didn’t have to decide what to do every time I opened the app. The next step was already there.
Keep your decisions in one place
As the project came together, I started saving much more than inspiration.
I kept paint colors I had already ruled out, fabric samples I liked, measurements, budget notes, links to stores, and little reminders that normally disappear after a few days.
Instead of repeating the same research every weekend, everything stayed with the project. When I picked it up again, I could spend my time creating instead of trying to remember where I had left off.
Finished projects become your best inspiration
One thing I didn’t expect was how satisfying it became to look back at completed projects.
Instead of scrolling through hundreds of ideas I might never start, I could open something I had actually finished. I added before-and-after photos, notes about what worked, mistakes I wouldn’t make again, and even the total cost.
Over time, the app became less like a Pinterest board and more like a personal portfolio of projects I had actually brought to life.
The takeaway
Pinterest is a wonderful place to discover ideas.
But ideas become much more valuable when they turn into something you can actually use, display, or share.
